So many memories of the Hillsbrad to Southshore PvP zerg have tainted the zone for me forever, but a fellow guild priest Tivoli enticed me into heading there again. This time however, we would be entering the Hillsbrad Foothills not from Silverpine Forest or Arathi Highlands, not even from the Western Plaguelands. Tivoli tipped me off saying that the Caverns of Time were finally open, and we were to take a group into the first instance. I was quickly summoned to the front of the Caverns of Time where Anachronous dwells, using the brand new Meeting Stone summoning portals. This new tool should make creating and gathering groups a lot faster than before.

The stone that was previously sealing the entrance of the Caverns of Time is gone, and a bronze dragon was waiting for me inside. After a quick dialog with the dragon, I became mounted on a drake and flown deep inside the caverns. The flight was rather short, but I got to see a lot of rather odd sights inside including a gigantic hourglass. This is where the hub of the cavern is, including the first tedious quest I had to complete before zoning in. A custodian of time is summoned, and they tell the story of the cavern. After this quest was completed, I was given a quest to head into the instance, and my group zoned in.

First thing that I noticed after zoning in is that I was suddenly ugly. Not only that, but a human! I know that I’m bald and everything, but human? That’s just an insult to my character. Everyone in the group becomes afflicted by a buff that switches their race to a more appropriate one to the instance. The quest that I was previously given is handed in right at the entrance, and a follow-up quest is given involving the next section of the zone, Durnholde Keep. For those of you who leveled in Hillsbrad, you will remember this area, there was a handful of Horde quests involving it.

The quest’s objectives are to locate barrels and set explosives inside them. This will cause a distraction so Thrall can be rescued, which is the main objective of the instance. The barrels are located inside of houses in the area below the bridge, where the rest of the orcs are being held captive. At the entrance of each house, there are 3-4 pulls of varying human guards.

Once the barrels have been located inside each of the houses, and explosives places inside, they are all set on fire. This causes a loud commotion, and the first boss of the zone, Lieutenant Drake comes rushing down. The fight is not that complicated, well suited for the first named mob of the zone. He did not place any debuffs on any of the party members, so it is a straight tank/heal/dps fight. Lieutenant Drake’s loot was Cloak of Impulsiveness dropped, a rare 18stam 18agi 40ap cloak.

The next part of the zone involves fighting through the keep in the center of the area, and down to the basement where Thrall is. Clearing the mob towards the keep involved 3-4 pulls of humans with melee and caster combos. None of the pulls are too complicated, but they do tend to hit a warrior in dps gear with a two-hander out rather hard. Other than one close call during a 4 pull, there were no healing problems during these pulls. The pulls are setup with one in each room inside the keep, same setup as before with the 4 humans. The quest indicator in your map shows that Thrall is held in the basement, not on the roof where our group first checked. This quest is bugged currently and only allows one person in the group to accept it, instead of showing the group accept prompt that most escort quests show.

This is where the zone gets tricky. Our group setup was lucky to
contain two priests, because Thrall is quite the runner. Like all escort quests, the npc really doesn’t know when to slow down or stop and this is where the two healers can help. Tivoli and I alternated when we drank in between pulls to conserve mana, just incase Thrall got a little ahead of himself and pulled two pulls. This only happened once because of a running mob. The mages in these pulls do polymorph so be ready to dispel at all times.

When Thrall reaches the outside gates of the keep, the next boss, Captain Skarloc spawns at the road in front of the keep and rides towards the group mounted. This is another simple boss fight, with the only twist being two adds that come with the boss. The warrior in the group pulled him away from the adds and Thrall added just enough dps to make this fight trivial. Captain Skarloc dropped a weapon a lot like Noth’s axe, the Amani Venom Axe.

With the second boss dead, Thrall commandeers the late captain’s horse and instructs the group to ride to Tarren Mill. Mount up and follow, because he moves quickly through this part of the zone. Thrall is headed to attempt to located Taretha who he believes is being held inside the town. He leads the group across the center river in Hillsbrad and north along it to sneak behind the barn in the town. Thrall instructs the group to move into the barn. He makes the mistake of spooking a horse which alerts a patrol of guards outside. Remember that line of sight can be tough for healers in this area, so if you aren’t a healer, be nice to the healers in the group and stay where they can heal you. Thrall heads towards the final area of the zone, the center of Tarren Mill, and inside the cathedral. Taretha isn’t located inside the cathedral, but the guards outside see an opportunity and strike while you are inside. This is a five pull, but isn’t that tough since you can line of sight the caster npcs using the entrance of the cathedral to slow down their dps.

Thrall next heads to the inn, the last place where she could be. Two pulls later, Thrall finds Taretha inside the upstairs bedroom under a spell. A booming voice from outside can be heard after a short dialog between the two. The Epoch Hunter does not sound happy that the group is interfering with the two. Thrall rushes outside and the final fight of the zone begins. Three sets of dragonkins spawn before the Epoch Hunter can be engaged. These pulls can be tough if you do not have a decurser, because they cast a -50% healing and -50% damage debuff on your group members. Since these are dragonkins, if you do have a druid in the group, remind them that they can put these to sleep, which makes the fight trivial.

The Epoch Hunter shouts and engages the group. Even though this is the final fight of the zone, his adds before him were more challenging, and this is a straightforward fight as usual. The hunter dropped a decent healing cloth shoulder, comparable (after socketing) to the Ternary Mantle from the bug trio in AQ.

Erozion appears after the boss dies and explains quickly that he needs to remove the memories from Taretha and Thrall. After a quick spell, Thrall forgets the group’s presence and leaves. The person who did complete the earlier quest with locating and starting the escort of Thrall can now turn in the quest and receive one of the rewards.

Overall this was an enjoyable instance, mostly because this was a rehash of a place that most people are familiar with. The highlight of the zone has to be seeing Thrall knock out the armory guard and suit up in leather. The loot is right on par with the zone’s intended level, a group of 68’s. Since there is a lot of mobs in the zone, this has been designed to generate a lot of experience while completing the quest of the instance. Caverns of Time is designed so that you do have to progress through the zones in order, so currently this patch you'd need to do the instance once per player in your 5 man group to progress to the next instance.

Source : http://forums.curse-gaming.com/showthread.php?t=1292

Running WoW on Ubuntu

Warning: this is only to be contemplated if you're really, really sick of Windows. It took me about ten hours of working on it to get it to work right. Hopefully it'll take you less time, but no guarantees. For reasons why you should consider this, and Blizzard should consider making WoW run natively under Linux, do some google searches for "keylogger", "virus", "windows crash", "windows losing focus", etc etc.

1. Back up everything you care about from your Windows system. This includes your WoW Addons and Interface folder, your bookmarks, etc etc. Better to back up the whole drive if you can, or install Ubuntu on a second hard drive. It will set up the dual-booting automatically.

2. Especially get your WoW patches. The retail to 1.12.0 patch is 465MB. Downloading this should be avoided if possible. The name of this file is WoW-1.12.0-enUS-patch.exe, if you need to look for it on faster download sites.

3. Read the install guide at http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?iVersionId=5606. I plan not to repeat much information that's in there.

4. Get the Ubuntu ISO from http://www.ubuntu.com/download, burn it, boot it, install it, etc. Let it run its updates.

5. Get and install your video card's driver. If you have an NVidia card, do not use nvidia-glx or nvidia-legacy or the driver Automatix2 optionally installs. Use the one at http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_1.0-8774.html and follow these instructions from http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=72490

Q u o t e:

Debian GNU/Linux or Ubuntu with Xorg 7.x

If you wish to install the NVIDIA Linux graphics driver on a Debian GNU/Linux or Ubuntu system that ships with Xorg 7.x, please ensure that your system meets the following requirements:

* development tools like make and gcc are installed
* the linux-headers package matching the installed Linux kernel is installed
* the pkg-config and xserver-xorg-dev packages are installed
* the nvidia-glx package has been uninstalled with the --purge option and the file /etc/init.d/nvidia-glx does not exist.

If you use Ubuntu, please also ensure that the linux-restricted-modules packages have been uninstalled. Alternatively, you can edit the /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules configuration file and disable the NVIDIA linux-restricted kernel modules (nvidia, nvidia_legacy) via:

DISABLED_MODULES="nv"

Easiest way to get make and gcc is through System -> Administration -> Synaptic.

6. Make sure your video card works - open a terminal window and run "glxgears". Run "glxinfo | grep vendor" and check that all three entries are the same, and are correct.

7. Next get and run Automatix2 using the instructions at http://getautomatix.com/wiki/index.php?title=Installation&Itemid=38. Note that if you have an NVidia card, do not install Automatix's driver. This will set your system up to a more broadly useful state.

8. Run "sudo dpkg-configure xserver-xorg" to allow you to adjust your screen resolution, unless you prefer to play at 1024x768 for some reason.

9. Now to install wine. If you have an NVidia card you will need to download the wine source, patch it with the .diff file, and compile it. Runthe ./configure and "make depend" checks first, you may need to get a few more packages such as bison to compile it successfully.

9. Once wine is installed, run winecfg to set it up. Check the sound setup too. When you're done put mfc42.dll in the system32 folder, which is under the hidden folder ".wine/drive_c".

10. Now it's time for the fun part - installing WoW. Note that CDs may not be ejectable with the standard button on the front. Pull down Places -> Computer then right-click the CD and find the Eject option. Once WoW is installed, it will try to update itself. Cancel this and copy the patches into its directory, then run WoW.exe. Wine should automatically be associated with .exe files. It will check the patches and then apply them. If it has a final patch to go, it will download this patch.

11. Now copy your Addons and Interface folders back, and you should be good to go!

Mail Order Bride

I know, I know. I've been slacking on my posts, but it was for a good reason! A lot of stuff has changed in the past couple of weeks. Despite my better judgment and lack of sobriety at the exact time of my final decision, I left Remorseless. One of the best guilds I had ever been a part of. Maybe not in terms of progression but in pure unadulterated fun and camaraderie.

I think that the decision was justifiable. In the same night I joined a newly forming guild with many of my long time friends, most of which are from the days of the burning legion. This guild is Mail Order Brides. When the guild is running BWL and AQ I can proudly say that I was there from the beginning. You know being an officer and the official website bitch.

As far as progression goes with MOB, we are on Domo, we can one shot Onyxia, and clear ZG with ease. In my opinion that not bad for a guild that is barely 2 weeks old. I think we will be in BWL by months end.

So far I'm very happy with my choice. Besides I don't think I've ever laughed so hard in my life. More about that in my next post.

More amazing hunter changes

Below is a copy of a forum post made by game designer Kalgan regarding Hunter mechanics in the Burning Crusade:

1. Attack Power and Crit related changes:

Hunters now get 1 AP per Agility rather than 2. This change helps us provide more interesting stat distributions on hunter items. Previously, Hunters valued Agi significantly above any other stat, such that it was extremely difficult for us to create variety among Hunter items. For example, before this change, we could have spent 1 stat point on an item to give you either 2 AP or 1 Agi (which gave 2 AP along with a small bonus to crit and a small bonus to dodge... clearly the better choice). However, several changes have been made along with this change in order to offset the AP loss.

Hunters now get significantly more crit per point of Agility than before (about 33agi/crit at level 60).

Hunters now get more dodge per point of Agility than before (about 20agi/dodge at lvl 60)

Ranged weapons have had their damage values significantly increased (and consequently the weapon's dps)... this also helps make weapon upgrades feel more meaningful for Hunters than it did previously (along with the other changes, this change is retroactive)

Most Hunter equipment has been updated to have a better distribution between +Attack Power bonuses and Agility

2. Traps are now on a 30 sec cooldown, but can be used in combat (you no longer need to feign/trap).

3. When feign death is resisted, you are still reduced to 0 threat for any targets that did not resist feign death (although if any creature resists the feign, you won't be taken completely out of combat, you'll still be on the creature group's target list).

4. Aimed Shot related changes:

Aimed Shot now resets the Hunter's shot timer. This talent was always intended to be an "opening" shot, and not something that would be woven between shots. However, since Aimed Shot became such a core element for Hunter DPS, we didn't want to make this change until we were prepared to make several other changes to increase hunter DPS to offset it. Fortunately, this means that some of the odd side effects of the old Aimed Shot are no longer relevant, such as requiring hunters to use extremely slow weapons to maximize their DPS (weapons slow enough to be able to use Aimed Shot in between auto shots)

Arcane Shot now does substantially more damage than it did before, and scales with AP.

Steady Shot has been introduced as a core ability in the expansion, and provides much the same kind of gameplay as Aimed Shot did in the past (a shot you weave in between your normal shots), but to a much more managable degree (since it's a 1.5 sec shot, it doesn't require as slow of a weapon to take advantage of, and doesn't require to stand still for as long).

5. Other note: Wyvern Sting may now be used in combat.

Hunter talents: Unofficial

Beast Mastery
Tier 6 - Animal Handler - Increases your speed while mounted by 4% and your pet's chance to hit by 2%. The one who is responsible for the corruption of countless civilizations.

Here's some information about Northrend as seen on WoWwiki.com, the greatest place on earth.

Often called "the roof of the world", Northrend is a frozen wasteland that lies far to the north of the world. As with the other continents, it was once part of the original Kalimdor landmass that was broken apart during the War of the Ancients. The land that became Northrend drifted far from Azeroth's temperate zone, which killed off a large portion of the remaining wildlife.

A particularly hardy breed of insectoid-humanoids, the Aqir, had survived the destruction. While a few humans and trolls eked out survival in small encampments, their presence was no match for the Nerubian

Empire.

Northrend also contains The Dragonblight: an enormous ice plain covered with the bones of thousands of Dragons. As they near death, the great beasts fly to Northrend so that they may die with their ancestors. Blizzard has been working on this area for some time now and an unfinished version is currently in game. Though the means to see the area is known only by the most skilled of explorers. This leads me to believe that the Emerald Dream would be the expansion pack that will come directly after the Burning Crusade. Think Q4 2007.

Of course part of me is pulling toward the fact that the Emerald Dream could just be an instance much like the Caverns of Time. If that is the case it would be massive. the land mass according to lore is the size of Kalimdor before the great implosion of the well of eternity.

The waking Dream of Creation and verdant realm of the Dragon Aspect Ysera. The Emerald Dream, as the realm of the wild, appears to those who travel within it as Azeroth would have appeared without the development of the sentient races. It is what Azeroth would have been if not for humans, elves and other intelligent creatures. This plane shows travelers what their world would be if intelligent races had not cut forests, farmed prairies, diverted rivers and built cities. It is a vision of the world as averdant natural paradise. Verdant forests stretch away in every direction, and rolling hills and majestic mountains mimic Azeroth’s landscape.

Indeed, Azeroth and the Emerald Dream are quasi-duplicates of each other. The Emerald Dream is Azeroth as seen through a magic lens, untouched by the hands of mortals. Indeed, the Emerald Dream is the Azeroth that would not have been split by magic into the two land masses of today - within it is the original greater landmass of Kalimdor, covered in the hazy emerald green forests of aeons past.

Nature is in a perfect balance in the Emerald Dream. Animals of all types inhabit the world, including some that are extinct on Azeroth and subspecies that never got the chance to evolve. Many fey creatures, such as sprites and faerie dragons, also roam the forests. However, it is not only the inhabitant creatures that roam the Dream. Creatures from Azeroth constantly visit, though they may or may not know it. Dreaming creatures arrive in the Emerald Dream and often have prophetic and helpful visions.

Druids enter the plane through their connection with nature. While within the dream, the traveler can, through exercise of will, view the waking world and to a limited extent interact with it (aspresumably all aspects of the world have some connection to the EmeraldDream). Accessing the Emerald Dream via more conventional magic is possible, but the plane’s natives do not look kindly on intruders.

The entire plane is the dominion of Ysera, the mighty green dragon Aspect, and she and her brood ensure that none despoil this paradise. For all its wonder, the Emerald Dream is not without its dangers. Those who visit via their dreams are welcomed and enfolded within the natural balance, but those who bring their physical selves face suspicion and hostility.

The Druid Malfurion Stormrage made use of the Emerald Dream to enter into the palace of Queen Azshara and thwart the plans of Lord Xavius.Ysera herself and a great number of the green dragonflight reside inthe dream either permanently or occassionally, as do the vast majorityof the Night Elf Druids. As part of an ancient pact made between Ysera and Malfurion Stormrage, the druids are required to spend long periods of time sleeping in the Emerald Dream in exchange for their powers over the forces of nature, presumably so that they will better appreciate that which they have pledged themselves to preserve. Recently, strange events have been transpiring within the Emerald Dream and it appears that Malfurion himself may be trapped within its confines.

A darker force has found its way into the Emerald Dream as well. Called The Nightmare, this mobile area of corruption stems from the twisted thoughts and fears of sleeping beings’ subconscious minds. The Nightmare travels slowly through the Emerald Dream, leaving corrupted, vicious animals and Unwaking travelers in its path. None, not even Ysera, knows why the Nightmare exists — nor why its boundaries grow.

Emerald Dream - WoWWiki

Currently in the game is 4 gateways, each of which lead to the Emerald Dream. They are located in Twilight Grove - Duskwood, Seranade - Hinterlands, Dream Bough - Feralas, and Bough Shadow - Ashenvale. View map.

These gateways are guarded by massive green dragons that take a 40 man raid group to defeat. So if it is an instance behind those gates you can expect it to be tuff, If it's another land mass you can bet you'll have to be 60 or above.

The biggest clue that it will be a later expansion is a quote by the Blizzard community manager Nethaera.

Nethaera: "As for the Emerald Dream, there are no plans for anything as of yet but it is a consideration for the future. The Emerald Dream opens up a lot of different opportunities and the Burning Crusade is definitely not going to be the last of the expansion packs. There are many different places and storylines that can be pursued. The story is going to keep growing and as it does so, people will get to experience it." 2006-09-06 08:19:20

Beyond the crusade, part 1 - The Great Sea

The Burning Crusades' release is emanate, soon adventures will take their first steps into the Outlands and conquer the dark new world, collect rare and priceless artifacts and dominate the battle field in the new PvP system. But on the horizon is the release of yet another expansion!

According to blizzard this won't be the last expansion for the game. Actually they have boldly stated that there will be an expansion every year from now until the World of Warcraft story line plays out in 2009. Best part is that the Warcraft story line is so deep that the possibilities for expansions are almost unlimited.

So what is going to be in the next expansion? No one knows for sure, not even the developers at blizzard. I remember reading the forums that in an during a pod cast interview some Blizzard bigwigs released some information on a proposed expansion, The Great Sea. This expansion would take place mostly underwater and supposedly have Naga and another unknown race as playable characters. It would revolve around Queen Azshara and her mighty kingdom and the Kul Tiras Islands.

This is where some lore and imagination come into play.

Ten thousand years before the orcs and humans clashed in their First War, the world of Azeroth cradled only one massive continent, surrounded by the sea. That landmass, known as Kalimdor, was home to a number of disparate races and creatures, all vying for survival amongst the savage elements of the waking world. At the dark continent's center was a mysterious lake of incandescent energies. The lake, which would later be called the Well of Eternity, was the true heart of the world's magic and natural power. Drawing its energies from the infinite Great Dark beyond the world, the Well acted as a mystical fount, sending its potent energies out across the world to nourish life in all its wondrous forms.

Later, Sargeras convinced Queen Azshara and the Highborne to create a portal in the well and leading to the first invasion of the Burning Legion.

Following the War of the Ancients, the Well of Eternity was destroyed, and most of Kalimdor with it, leaving only the Maelstrom. However, Illidan had filled several magical vials with water from the Well of Eternity, and he poured some of the magical water into the lake at the top of Mount Hyjal, creating a new Well. For this insane act, his brother Malfurion and the demigod Cenarius imprisoned him deep beneath Mount Hyjal.

The new Well was completely absorbed by the growth of Nordrassil, its malevolent magics lost with the enchantments of the Aspects.

However, Illidan had not emptied all of his vials in creating the second Well of Eternity (which is why the Aspects were able to enchant the World Tree with no interference). Somehow, the Highborne under the leadership of Dath'Remar had acquired one of the remaining vials and, after founding their new homeland of Quel'Thalas, used it to create the Sunwell.

Well of Eternity - WoWWiki

When the Well of Eternity imploded more then 80% of the land mass went with it. As the ocean swallowed the land many of the privative settlements and towns sunk to the cold dark depths. This gives the developers a lot to play with, and seeing how it is a HUGE part of the story I'm definite that they will. Only time will tell when and if they make The Great Sea expansion. The answer to this could be known as early as the middle of next year.

Items from the Bruning Crusade.

The Noggaholics are up to it again.. There are so many things going on with the World of Warcraft that I don't know where to start.

Spells and Talents:
Yesterday blizzard announced the Burning Crusade talents and spells for 6 of the 9 classes. Warrior, Shaman, Paladin, Mage, Rogue and Warlock. All of these changes are very exciting and add some unique features to the game. Of course on the forums you have those that choose to moan and groan, and you know that blizzard will make tweaks and changes to them before the release. But for now It's a glimpse in what to expect in the up coming expansion.

I can't wait to see shaman whipping out their fire elemental or wielding 2 axes, Also the bloodlust ability for Horde shaman is very uber. The mage class gets invisibility which they had in beta but lost upon release, and Spellsteal which allows them to take 1 beneficial spell from an opponent and use it as their own.

As for the other classes, go to the official website and read the upcoming changes.

Tons of screen shots:
Thanks to the friends and family alpha release groups of people like Nogghoholics are posting a ton of new screen shots on the web.

Some truely intense stuff here. Nothing feels better then to actually cut down a foe or put an arrow in the skull of a gnome. Even though the thoughts of such activities sounds enticing they are rather intense and just like sex you need practice and intelligence to be any good at it.

This short guide will prepare you for starting PvP and give a refresher course to the seasoned killer.

Let me first start off telling you about my experience in battlegrounds. The highest rank that I had ever achieved was 90% of the way into rank 9. Then life set in and I had to take my leave. Of course this was on the server Burning Legion and with a shaman. Burning Legion for those who haven't heard much about it was one of the more elite PvP servers. It's home of Enigma, OG, Jagd and original home to Executus's famous Ropetown.
I have had the privilege to play along side some of WoW's true champions. However it was so hard to rank up on Burning Legion that most people PvP'd simply for sport or rep with the various factions.

The best way for me to describe how to be elite even though I'm not myself is to explain what I've been taught by the masters and what I've learned along the way. Just a note before you get to deep into this type of game play style. It's tough, you'll loose, you'll nub out, but never ever let it discourage you. You'll learn with time and with the proper gear and patience you'll eventually push yourself to the next level and destroy all that stand in your path.

Practice with duels: Join your guild mates in friendly duels to sharpen the skills you'll use against battleground opponents. The more you duel the better you'll get. Your friends will be more than happy to tell you of your mistakes and from that you'll learn tactics the will aid you in defeating opponents from each class. So practice, practice, practice.

Travel in groups: PUGs suck, in PvE as well as PvP. Especially so in Warsong Gulch where if your PUG can't score a single time you'll waist a good portion of time, and there is no reward for being the suck. Instead join battlegrounds with guild mates or friends, use ventrillo to communicate, and learn the tactics that best suits your team then stick with it.

Know when to run away: Say you're at the farm and 2 warriors and a druid come charging at you. RUN! Run to the nearest group of friendlies then turn around and fight. 3 >1 always. But still use your brain. For instance, you're in the flag room when 3 opponents come running to grab the flag. Your job then is to stall them as quickly as possible and keep them in position till help arrives. Even if that means that you have to die in the process.

Spec and Gear: As a hunter the best PvP build in my opinion is 0/21/30. You would not believe the difference this setup made in my PvP life style. Each class has it's own tried and true PvP spec so the best thing to do is to read the forums and find out what works best for you.

For most classes there is gear that will benefit you more in PvP then PvE. Your job when starting the PvP train is to do some research. Check our what stats you need then fill up on it. For instance hunters need +agility and +chance to crit. We can get most of the stats we need from our Giantstalker's set. There is also the PvP armor that you can buy as you rank up. A good place to find out about armor and items for your class is again on the WoW forums.

Play Smart: This is self explanatory.. For the love of god use your brain.

PvP can be fun, and rewarding so DO IT. The sword hits like a tank and steals life. But what interests me the most is the lore behind this awesome weapon.

Back story:
Ashbringer, the Blade of the Scarlet Highlord, is an object of great mystery and power.

One of the previous Highlords of the Scarlet Crusade, Highlord Mograine was known as the Ashbringer. Archmage Timolain crafted him a sword meant to be a bane against all the undead. It (and he) were called such because when he would take to the battlefield, his frenzied blows would fell the Scourge so fast that he would be surrounded in falling ash.

Several characters have mentioned the Ashbringer (or its maker Timolain) on occasion, but the only beings believed to know the current location of the Ashbringer are Nat Pagle, Master Fisherman, and Prince Tortheldrin, the leader of the Shen'dralar within Dire Maul. Getting the full story from them has proven difficult, but Tortheldrin's followers claim that he may be willing to tell what he knows if a player were to defeat the dragon Nefarian and share the tale with him. Some have brought Nefarian's head to Tortheldrin, though he said nothing that lead to the Ashbringer.

It now seems that Highlord Mograine was corrupted by Kel'Thuzad and serves him as a death knight in Naxxramas. He still wields the Ashbringer, though the blade has become corrupted as well. --WoW wiki

Where it drops:
The Corrupted Ashbringer drops from the four horsemen. The loot table of the four horsemen changes accourding to the order they are killed. Saving Mograine for last will give you a chance for the Corrupted Ashbinger to drop. If you're lucky enough to get this epic item you will be able to start a quest line to uncorrupt the Ashbringer, If you can find out how.

The Quest:
A korean guild has somehow found a way to start the quest chain. Here is a link to that information.

Apearently equiping the sword makes you friendly with the Scarlet Crusade and hated with the Argent Dawn. This allows you to walk into the Scarlet Monastary and chat it up with Scarlet Commander Mograine, whom just happens to be the son of Highlord Mograine. This triggers an event where a ghostly figure in full tier 3 Dreadnaught apears and starts a conversation with Commander Mograine. I found this translation online.

Mograine: son
Mograines Son: Father how?
Mograine: Do you think I forgot about your betrayal? I came here to pay you back. I am not bound by Kelthuzad anymore. Son! I come for justice. I am the Ashbringer and I shall have my vengeance.
Mograines Son: No! please, forgive me.
Mograine: You are forgiven my son.
After their conversation, Mograine kills his son in one shot. Then all the NPCs disappeared.

Realizing that theres one NPC trapped in the east corner of the room, he goes to the corner to talk to him. To his surprise, an undead (Fairbank) gets sanctified back into human and he expresses his gratitude for freeing him from the curse. Then he tells the player this long story about the history of Mograine and Ashbringer:

As you can see, thats a lot of material so I am just going to present a brief synopsis.

Mograine was a holy knight responsible for the founding of the Scarlet Monastery. During his time, the order embodied the true value of justice and its willingness to relinquish evil. But a tragedy has befallen where Mograines son betrayed his father by making a pact with Kelthuzad.
As planned, Mograine, Fairbank and his son were ambushed by thousands of undead soldiers. Mograines son fled but his father fought valiantly. While Fairbank being a puny ass, was slayed and buried deep beneath the bodies of the undead soldiers, he witnessed the scene where Mograines son held the Ashbringer and struck at his own father. In that instance, Mograine and Ashbringer became one, cursed with vengeful spirit.
Fairbank was able to escape and he alerted the son of Mograines betrayal to his fellow Scarlet Monastery members. Those who believed him established a new order called the Argent Dawn.

Now back to the sword:
Korean Player: Is it possible to cleanse this sword?
Fairbank: It is most likely that its too late to cleanse the sword that you have on your hand. The vengeance embodied within the sword is too deep! But dont loose hope. If theres an end, theres a chance for a new beginning. Find his son whos well known for his modesty and faith. It has been rumored that even without the Corrupted Ashbringer, its possible to construct a new Ashbringer.
Korean Player: What are you talking about? Hes already dead
Fairbank: You are wrong. You only killed one of them. The other still lives!

[High Inquisitor Fairbanks shakes his head]
No, orc! Only one of his son is dead. The other still lives.
[High Inquisitor Fairbanks points to the sky]
Outland...Go and seek him.

When can a hunter melee?

A hunter should never rely on melee. I know this and so does just about every other good hunter in the game. For this post though I'm going to describe a talent build and some situations where a hunter should use what he always has available, the mighty melee weapon.

The inspiration behind this post is my recent goody from Zul'gurub, the halberd of Smiting. Before you start bashing me for rolling on it or spending DKP let me first say this. None of the warriors wanted it and it was going to get disenchanted. So I decided to grab it and check it out basically to write this post. No DKP spent.

Good news is that the Halberd, even though it has no stats for a hunter still hits insanely hard. Normal hits peak at about 450 vs leather, and crits can jump as high as 1374(largest I've got). With raptor strike it hits for a ton, and the weapon proc hits for an ass load... Perfect warrior weapon. So the question is, when do you use it?

My build pre Halberd was 5/31/15. Perfect build for raiding.
After the Halberd I went with 0/21/30 Great build for pvp. Please note that I put 2 points into savage strikes just for the polearm.

The BEST part about this build and the Halberd is the chance to crit with Raptor Strike. My Default chance to crit with a melee weapon is 11.5%, 2 points into Savage Strikes is 31.5%, with Killer Instinct (2 points) 33.5% and a 25 agility enchant on the Halberd would add another .5% chance to crit. Bringing the grand total to 32% chance to crit with Raptor Strike and this is with my 1 item that has a +1% chance to crit on it, so better gear would of course boost it even higher.

32% chance to crit with Raptor Strike + halberd of Smiting + Proc = PAIN!

It is possible against a clothy to hit them for more 1500 with a Raptor strike, and untill the 1.12 patch it's also possible for the proc during the Raptor Strike to hit them for another 1200 if it crits. When was the last time you've seen a hunter run up to a mage and 1 shot him with a polearm? Sounds kind of nice doesn't it.

Even though it's fun to cut people this is not what the 0/21/30 build is all about. I can't say this enough HUNTERS ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO MELEE! the tatic with this build is to immobilize your target if they get to close to you, run away and put an arrow in em. The only reason the Halberd is good is the proc, it goes off often. So with a Wing Clip you have a chance to add another 676-1200 damage to it. With a Counter Attack same thing, Boom 676-1200 damage. Not to mention if you are close enough and the cool down is up throw a Raptor strike in with it, or when you get a chance Mongoose Bite. After you leave your target immobilized and in pain back up and finish them off with a head shot.

So do I think the Halberd is a good weapon for hunters, yes and no. Raid specced hunters would never have a use for it. PVP specced hunters would enjoy the proc. So my final word of advice. If it's going to get disenchanted take it and have fun trying out a new spec, but NEVER EVER take it from a warrior or paladin. That's just wrong. They'll get far better use out of it then you ever will.

Before anyone has a chance to bash me for having it.. OMGZ Look hunter with a Halberd nub nub nub ROFLCOPTERS! Each point of mana that is destroyed also damages the target from which it is consumed.

Inferno:
Surrounds the caster with an inferno that periodically inflicts Fire damage to nearby enemies for 8 sec. Each Pulse of the flame increases in damage and does up to 2000 DMG a pulse after 9 pulses.

Living Bomb*:
Throws a bomb at an enemy. After 8 sec., the bomb explodes, inflicting 3200 Fire damage to the target and its nearby allies.

Melt Armor:
Reduces the armor of nearby enemies by 1000 for 1 min.

The encounter:
The main issue a lot of guilds have is with Living Bomb and Ignite Mana. I can't count the number of times that a kill was about to happen when BOOM, someone set us up the bomb.

The strategy that I grew up with involves 2 main groups melee DPSers (blue) and casters/ranged (red). The boss is tanked in front of the 2 groups, but far enough away so that the Inferno won't wipe out them out. There is also a bomb lane(white)which the person inflicted with Living Bomb must run to. After getting into position the fight is pretty straight forward.

The single most important thing to remember is that IF YOU ARE THE BOMB RUN TO THE BOMB LANE! He casts Living bomb ever 25-30 seconds and if you are the bomb you have 8 seconds till you explode. Run to the bomb lane and hug against the wall so when you explode you'll catch the wall and avoid fall damage. Needless to say going AFC even for even a second during this encounter could cost the life of your raid. Remember Bomb = bomb lane, bomb - bomb lane = death, death = no lewt, simple huh!

The only exception to this rule is if the main tank is the bomb. If this happens make sure that he is far enough away from the groups as to not wipe the raid, and ALL healers do your job and keep the poor guy alive. A shield right before the explosion wouldn't hurt.

Tactic for the Melee DPSers.
This is simple! Baron has a spell called Inferno in which he sends out 9 rings of fire. With each ring the amount of damage increases, the final ring does a whopping 2k damage. When you are kicking the shit out of Baron watch for the first ring of fire, then run to the blue dot on the map above. Try not to get hit by more than one, the healers need their mana for the main tank. After the final ring count to 3 so the tank can get full aggro again and rush in and commence kicking the shit out of Baron.

Ranged DPS and Casters.
Healers heal the main tank, Decursers decurse the mana ignite. and DPS do what you do best.

For the ranged DPSers, the best strategy is to go all out when the main tank has 5 sunder armors on Baron, but try not to pull aggro. So no nukes mages. When he starts to cast Inferno go with all white DPS, meaning hunters only auto shot, casters use your wands. He wipes some but not all aggro from the main tank... So the last thing you want is for him to come charging into the caster group.

Decurse damn you!!
At the planning stage of the encounter decide who will be decursing. Decursive is your best friend here. You should prioritize your decurse list for this encounter so that it doesn't include the people without mana. This is so very important because healers without mana are useless and the raid wipes. Read more about it here

Tip to Ranged:
There is a sweet spot that casters can enter where you are still in range, but you're out of range of his Mana Ignite. Don't count on using this as a tactic because guess what, the Baron will move and you'll be out of luck. Just thought I would throw it out there for you.

Fire Resist Gear.
If you're not main tank don't go all out because you won't need it. Main tanks should pop on the dark iron gear and attempt to hit the 250 mark with FR. Other then that if you stick to the strategy above you shouldn't get slapped around by Baron.

OMGZ LEWT!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://executus.blogspot.com/2006/08/nerfed-you-are-bomb.html' title='Nerfed! My hunter dinged 60 about 3 weeks ago. Since then I've gotten some pretty decent gear (beastmaster's and black dragonscale). I've still yet to find a decent bow even thou I've ran instances as many times as I can stomach. It's to the point that I'm contemplating the purchase of a Dwarven Hand Cannon but I need to save money for my epic mount. Choices.

In order to earn money I've spent a lot of time soloing the elementals in DM West, they drop librams but the damn things are almost worthless now. The main cash comes from the greens and grays that they drop. At the moment I can earn about 50-100 gold an hour this way... Still slow for my taste.

So here's the question, How did you get the gold for your mount?

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://executus.blogspot.com/2006/08/wtb-epic-mount-pst.html' title='WTB epic mount! The server is one of the oldest in the World of Warcraft and had many benefits to being on it. Including some of the best PVP the game had to offer, but of course with age comes stability issues. We spent most of our time waiting for lag spikes to stop or trying to log in after a server crash, or just something that messed up. So the original guild Zero split into two groups, one went with Turmoil a BWL epic guild, and one continued down the path they where on by merging with Altimate. It's great for a while.

So then Blizz opens up paid character transfers and guess what, the majority of both guilds transferred. I choose to go with the altimate people to Executus... bad move, little did I know that they would merge with Stugots one of the best guilds on the server and one of the guilds with the strangest raid times. FUCK! So here I'm stuck on executus for 6 months and no guild.
